Sanford is the capital of Seminole County in Florida. It used to be a trade center which is reflected by the old merchant houses in the attractive streets in the center, with on both sides old oaks covered with Spanish moss. Because of the watery surroundings, Sanford is mainly a city for water sports enthusiasts.
The city has over 50,000 inhabitants.
Sanford is centrally located in eastern Florida, between Orlando and Daytona Beach. The city lies along the St. Johns River and Lake Monroe, with Lake Jessup being south of Sanford. It has watery surroundings with several lakes and swamps.
The service sector creates most employment in Sanford; public services (the government) account for a large part of the jobs. Thanks to Lake Monroe and the connection with the so-called Intracoastal Waterway (to Jacksonville and Mayport in the north of the state) many water sports enthusiasts come to Sanford. Orlando-Sanford International Airport (not to be confused with Orlando International Airport) is situated 8 kilometers southeast of the city center. Sanford Airport is easily reachable by rental car via French Avenue and West Airport Boulevard.
Sanford has good public transport, exploited by the company Lynx. The bus network covers the entire city and large part of the urban surroundings, including a bus connection with Orlando. The controversial train project Sun Rail will see the light in 2012 or 2013 with a station in Sanford. Speaking of the train: Sanford Station is the terminus of the so-called Auto Train, a rail connection between Lorton in Virginia (at only 40 kilometers from Washington DC) and Florida. As a large number of people from Seminole County and Volusia County work in the neighboring Orange County, the roads around Sanford are very busy during morning and evening rush hour. You'll have little trouble finding a free parking place for your rental car in the city itself. From Sanford you can easily visit Disney World: you take the I-4 in the direction of Orlando. Near this city, the I-4 turns into the Eastern Beltway which ends at the attraction park.
There are some accommodations in Sanford's center, but you'll find more hotels near the airport. There's also a concentration of hotels and motels in the western part of town, just along the I-4 near the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens.
