Introduction

Hanover is the capital city of the German federal state Lower Saxony. During World War II, the city was largely destroyed. After the war a part of the inner city was rebuilt, but Hanover also presents itself with modern architecture. The museums of the city (such as the Sprengel-Museum for modern art and the Landesmuseum) have interesting collections of paintings and sculptures. Hanover is also known for many beautifully landscaped parks and gardens.

Location

The city lies in the north of Germany on the Leine river. North of the city lies the plains of the North German Lowlands, south of Hanover is a hilly area that joins the Harz Mountains further south.

Economy

Hanover is an important industrial city. Volkswagen has a large factory where company cars are made, and the tyre company Continental and battery manufacturer Varta are established in Hanover. There are also many banks and insurance companies, and the large travel company TUI headquarters are there. Hanover has always been a trading city, and this is reflected in the Hanover Messe, one of the largest industrial fairs in the world and the computer fair CeBIT. Throughout the year, large exhibitions and conferences are organized in Hanover.

Airports

Hannover-Langenhagen Airport lies 11 kilometers north of the city center. The airport is easily reachable with a car: The airport lies next to the A352, the link between highways A7 (Hamburg-Kassel) and A2 (Berlin-Dortmund). The route to the airport is clearly signposted.

Public transportation

Hanover has a good public transportation system consisting of a fine network of bus lines, trams and city trains (S-Bahn). The Hanover Card is handy for tourists: with this you receive free access to public transportation and discount on entrance fees and attractions. The card can be purchased with a validity of 1 or 3 days. There are also group tickets (for 2-5 people).

Traffic and parking

Hanover is a very busy city and a large part of the main shopping center (where there are many nice terraces) is car free. In the rest of the city you can drive around comfortably. To find a parking space can be difficult, especially during international fairs and conferences. A vehicle must have a special sticker to enter the Umweltzone (the city center). Rental cars have such a sticker. A rental car is an excellent form of transportation to explore the surroundings of Hanover.

Hotels

As congress and exposition city, there is no lack of accommodation in Hanover. You will find the most expensive hotels, but also simple youth hostels and everything in between. Individuals also offer rooms to rent on a large scale. We suggest you to always book your room well in advance in Hanover.
