Some years following the Roman invasion of England, the Romans decided to build a fortress near a crossing at the River Exe. Parts of those fortified walls are still standing. Exeter is an excellent operating base for trips through the rough landscape of the county of Devon.

Exeter is located in the southwest of England in the county of Devon. The old center was built on the east bank of the River Exe which turns into a delta further south.
Being the administrative capital of the county of Devon, the government is one of the city's main employers. The city also houses the University of Exeter and one of the most prominent meteorological institutes in the world: The Met Office. Tourism also plays an important role, but only 7% of the working population is employed in tourism, compared with 13% in the entire county of Devon. The airline Flybe is also an important employer in Exeter.
Exeter International Airport is situated just east of the city. It's easily reachable by rental car: from the city center you first take Frog Street and then you take the B3183 to the airport.
Exeter's central bus station is located in High Street, a pedestrian street, except for buses and bicycles. Most city buses are exploited by Stagecoach South West; some lines are exploited by Dartline. There are also bus connections with places in the southwest of England, as well as with destinations further out such as Heathrow Airport and the British capital London.
Finding your way around Exeter isn't difficult and finding a free parking place shouldn't be a problem either. There are several parking garages in and around the city center. There are also special P+R areas on the verge of the city where you can park your rental car and travel to the center in special Park + Ride buses. These parking lots are indicated by color: Red (Honiton Road), Green (Matford) and Blue (Sowton).
