Östersund is a popular ski resort in Sweden. There are several ski runs in the vicinity and even one within the city limits. The city has hosted many national and international competitions, for example in the city's ice rink.

Östersund is centrally located in Sweden and is the largest city of Jämtland County. The city center lies on a large lake, Storsjön, opposite the island of Frösön.
Östersund is the social, cultural and economic heart of Jämtland County. The government is the largest employer. There used to be a large army base in the city, but it was removed at the beginning of the 21st century. It's been replaced by call centers from, for example, the largest Swedish newspaper, Svenska Dagbladet and Swedbank. There's also a university with 7000 students and dairy cooperation Milko is headquartered in Östersund. Winter tourism is also an important source of income. In summer Lake Storsjön attracts many water sports enthusiasts.
Östersund Airport is situated on the island of Frösön, 11 kilometers west of the city center. The island is connected with the mainland via a bridge. Östersund Airport is easily reachable by rental car.
Östersund has excellent public transport. Stadsbussarna i Östersund exploits nine bus lines in town; some lines run to popular ski runs in the vicinity. There are also bus and train connections with other Swedish places, but also with Trondheim in Norway. High-speed trains run to Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.
The city center is divided in zones: the closer you get to the central square Stortorget, the more expensive it's to park in the street. There's also a large parking garage near that square. Stortorget and some nearby streets are a pedestrian zone. Around that area there are seven parking lots (for example near the Tourist Office).
Östersund has a large choice of accommodations, but you won't find a five-star hotel. For budget tourists there are good options in the city center; on the lake you'll mainly find midrange hotels. There's also a campsite three kilometers outside the town with a good bus connection.
