If you are looking for a rental car in Saint Martin, but in a city other than Philipsburg, please click through to the Car rental Saint Martin page, where you can choose in which city in Saint Martin you want to rent a car.
Philipsburg is the capital of Saint Martin, the Dutch part of the island in the Caribbean, which belonged to the Netherlands Antilles until October 10, 2010, but on that date became a separate country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It's a popular tourist destination, especially for Americans.
Only 1500 people live in Philipsburg and the 'city' therefore has a fairly rural character.
Philipsburg is located in the south of the island on a small stretch of land with a salt lake to the north and on the other side the sea. This way the salt extracted from the lake was easily shipped. The salt lake has partially been reclaimed (the Dutch, right?) to create space for the growth of Philipsburg. There are still some wooden buildings in Philipsburg dating back to the eighteenth century, including the former courthouse. Fort Amsterdam on a peninsula west of the city is also worth a visit.
Although the island is divided into a French and a Dutch part, there's no real border. Everyone on the island can do as they please. This has greatly stimulated tourism on the island. The Dutch part is most developed, with holiday resorts, timeshare apartments and casinos. The latter are lacking on the French part, but here the natural beauty of the island is the main attraction. Plus a nudist beach. Many cruise ships moor in the harbor of Philipsburg.
Saint Martin's airport is situated in the Dutch part and is called Princess Juliana International Airport. It lies directly behind Maho Beach in the west. Because of the short runway, planes skim over the beach; normally at an altitude of approximately 20 meters, but sometimes even lower. The airport lies over 10 car kilometers west of the city center and is reachable by rental car via the winding road along the south coast.
Philipsburg is so small that it doesn't need public transport. There's, however, good public bus transport to other places on the island, by minibuses. Most minibuses run between Philipsburg and Marigot, the capital of the French part.
There are few parking places in Philipsburg's center and in some streets there's a parking ban at set times during the day. This isn't always clearly indicated. Cars are also quite often broken into, so don't leave any valuables in your rental car, not even in the trunk. The roads on Saint Martin are quite narrow and the road between the two 'capitals', Philipsburg and Marigot, is extremely busy.
Saint Martin has a large choice of accommodations, but it's definitely not a budget-friendly island. During high season (December through April) the cheapest hotel rooms cost about US$ 100 with tourist and service taxes on top. Out of season prices are considerably lower.
