Already in the sixteenth century Agadir was a trading port. Nothing is left of the old Agadir as the city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1960. Afterwards the city was rebuilt and developed into the seaside resort of Morocco, where many Europeans winter.
The city itself has about 200,000 inhabitants. Including the cities Inezgane en Aït Melloul they are about three times as many.
Agadir is situated in the south of Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean. North of the city lie the foothills of the High Atlas, in the south the Anti-Atlas. Behind that mountain range lies the Sahara desert.
