Kerry is a county in the very southwest of Ireland. It is known for its rugged landscape and the Ring of Kerry which runs through it. Killarney is the main tourist resort, which is often the starting point for the route over the Iveragh peninsula. The best way to do the Ring of Kerry is with a rental car, but please, take our advice: go counter clockwise, because most people (and tour buses too) go clockwise. The Killarney National Park is just south of the city. Killarney is a lively town with cozy pubs and good restaurants. That is why many Irish and British spend a weekend there.
Killarney has a population of 15,000.
Killarney lies in the southwest of Ireland in a diverse landscape of mountains, forests and lakes. Southwest of the city is the highest point in Ireland, Mount Carrantuohill (1040 m).
Tourism is Killarney's most important source of income. Furthermore, there is some industry. For example, the German manufacturer Liebherr develops and manufactures container cranes here. When the national government in Dublin was decentralized, Killarney got the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism. Previously, the Ministry of Justice had already been transferred to Killarney.
Kerry Airport (in Irish: Aerfort Chiarraí) is located thirteen kilometers north of Killarney. The airport is easily accessible by rental car. First take the N22 and then the N23; the airport is right next to the road.
The bigger Cork Airport is only half an hour away by rental car when you follow the N22 northeast.
There is no public transport in Killarney. There are bus connections to other places in Ireland. Many people go on a ride called Jaunting Cars (horse and carriage); it's not cheap, but a lot of fun.
During summer Killarney is a busy town and finding a parking space is very difficult then. Fortunately, most hotels have ample parking facilities. You can also park your car at the train station. A rental car is ideal for making excursions. Except for the Ring of Kerry, the roads in this part of Ireland are not busy at all and you will not have any trouble finding your way.
There is a huge range of accommodations in Killarney. Except for Dublin, Killarney has by far the largest number of hotels in Ireland. There is also a big variety, from top class five star hotels to small and simple bed and breakfasts and youth hostels. Killarney is a very popular tourist destination. We therefore recommend you to book your accommodation well in advance, especially if you want to visit County Kerry in summer.
