Naxos is the capital of the Greek island of the same name in the Aegean Sea. A striking characteristic of the picturesque, old walled city center (Castro) is the marble gate on an island near the harbor. It's the only remainder of a temple, dedicated to Apollo. The town was built when Venice governed the island.
Naxos City has almost 7000 inhabitants, about one third of the island's total population.
Naxos' capital is located on the island's west coast. Here you'll also find the most beautiful beaches, especially south of the capital (also called Hora). A ridge runs centrally across the island, from north to south. Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades island group in the southern part of the Aegean Sea.
The largest island of the Cyclades island group is also the most fertile. Agriculture is therefore an important source of income for Naxos. The harbor of Naxos City is a hub for the network of ferries in the southern Aegean Sea. Tourism is of course also important, but percentagewise not as important as on some other islands in Greece.
Naxis Airport is situated over 3 kilometers south of the center and is easily reachable by rental car via the Agiou Arseniou and Andrea Papandreou.
Naxos has good public bus transport. From the capital's bus station buses run to other towns on the island and to the tourist resorts and hotels along the beaches. There are also ferry connections to several islands, including neighboring island Paros, and to Piraeus, Athens's port.
The old town can only be explored by foot; you can park your rental car on parking lots outside the city walls. The roads on Naxos are good, also to the mountainous inland. Be cautious of stray cattle on the roads.
There are some accommodations in the city, but most tourists stay in hotels or resorts along Naxos' beautiful beaches: Prokopios, Agia Anna, Plaka and Mikri Vigla. We advise booking your hotel room in advance in summer months (July and August); at other times there's sufficient choice.
