Car Rental Vitória

Introduction

Vitória is the capital of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo and is famous for the surrounding beaches and its cultural events. It's also a perfect operating base for trips by rental car to cities and other attractions in the vicinity, like Vila Velha, Guarapari, Domingos Martins and Serra.

Population

The city has approximately 315,000 inhabitants.

Location

Vitória is located on Brazil's east coast and is surrounded by a continuous system of lakes and rivers, as a result of which the city actually lies on an island. The island is gorgeous: there are beaches, mangrove forests and rock formations like the Maciço da Fonte Grande and the Pedra dos Olhos. Vitória lies about 500 kilometers northeast of Rio de Janeiro.

Economy

Port activities form the backbone of local economy. There are two ports: the Port of Vitória and the Port of Tubarão, one of the world's largest ports for transshipment of iron ore. It was constructed by the mining company Vale. Not surprisingly Vitória also has steel industry: ArcelorMittal has a large factory here. Tourism plays a considerable role as source of income. There are beautiful beaches near Vitória.

Airports

Vitória Airport (also: Eurico de Aguiar Salles Airport), is situated about 10 kilometers north of the center, near the popular beach Camburi. From the city center the airport is reachable by rental car in about 15 minutes. You first take the Av. Leitão da Silva to the north and then the Av. Fernando Ferrari to the airport. The way to the airport is clearly signposted.

Public Transport

Vitória has excellent public city transport. The material is modern and on most lines buses run every 10 minutes during daytime. There are also good bus connections with other Brazilian cities, like Rio de Janeiro, Sâo Paulo, Salvador and Belo Horizonte. The central bus station (Terminal Rodoviário Carlos Alberto Vivácqua Campos) is located in the center. Bear in mind that these are long bus rides. Vitória has no train station; the nearest one is in Cariacica, about 20 kilometers west of the city center.

Traffic and Parking

Vitória is an active port city and a tourist attraction. Traffic in the center can be busy and it isn't easy to find a free parking place in the street. There are some parking lots and garages in and around the center but we don't recommend exploring the city center by rental car; it's better to leave it at your hotel (most hotels offer parking facilities) and use it for trips through the beautiful surroundings and to quiet beaches.

Hotels

Vitória has an enormous choice of accommodations. There are branches of many international hotel chains, but also cozy family guesthouses and midrange hotels. In the city center you'll mainly find business hotels. Tourist hotels and resorts can be found on the beaches, the bulk just north of Vitória.
