Skopje is the capital of the Republic of Macedonia. The city has been submitted to several superpowers. The Ottoman Empire held absolute sway for the longest time, which is reflected by the large number of mosques and other buildings from that time. You can, however, also admire churches from the Byzantine days and relics from the Romans (including an aqueduct) in Skopje.
The city has almost 700,000 inhabitants.
Skopje is centrally located in the Balkan, in South East Europe. The Vardar River flows through the city to discharge into the Aegean Sea via Greece further south. Skopje lies approximately halfway the Serbian capital Belgrade and the Greek capital Athens.
The presence of heavy industry in Skopje dates back to the communist times. There are still chemical factories, machine building and metal industry. The textile industry is also important for the city's employment. The last few years, Skopje focuses more and more on commerce, financial services and logistics. There are duty-free zones near the city to attract more modern companies. Skopje also promotes its rich history, hoping for more tourists to visit the city.
Skopje Airport is named after one of Macedonia's greatest sons, Alexander the Great. It's situated over 20 kilometers east of the city center and is easily reachable by rental car. From the center you take the Boulevard Aleksandar Makedonski east and then freeway M3 or M4 to the airport.
Skopje's central bus station lies about 2 kilometers east from the city center. This isn't strange as the train station is also located here and it's therefore a public transport hub. Skopje's public bus transport is good with an extensive network to the different parts of the city. Plans exist to construct a streetcar line in the city. There are also bus and train connections with for example the Greek Thessaloníki, the Serbian Belgrade and the Bulgarian Sofia.
The old center is partially a pedestrian zone, but it's small enough to discover by foot. You'll find several large parking lots and parking garages around the center to park your rental car. For security reasons we advise against parking in the street.
Macedonia's capital has a good choice of accommodations, but if you like a good night's rest, it's better not to book a room in the city center. There are many bars, cafés and nightclubs which are open until deep into the night, especially near the old bridge across the river.
