As its name indicates, Veendendaal used to be a moor colony. After that it became a textile centre. After the demise of the textile industry, many factories and houses were demolished. Nowadays Veendendaal is a modern city with large residential areas, modern offices and lots of green. Not much is left of the old city, except for the Oude Kerk (Old Church) and the Wolkammer statuette on the Markt, and some workers' houses.
The city has over 60,000 inhabitants. Traditionally, it is a town with a largely Christian population, which is expressed, among other things, in the fact that none of the shops are open on Sundays.
Veendendaal is located in the south-east of the province of Utrecht in the centre of the Netherlands. It is situated on the A12 motorway, the important east-west connection from the Randstad to the German border. The city is surrounded by beautiful nature areas like the Veluwe, the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Betuwe. Veendendaal is located 75 km from Amsterdam, 85 km from Rotterdam and 40 km from Utrecht (distances by road).
Since the 19th century, Veendendaal used to be the centre of wool, textile and cigars (the famous Scheepjeswol comes from this city). When the textile industry disappeared from the Netherlands it came as a blow to Veenendaal. Thanks to its central location and excellent road connections, the city has developed as a centre of transport and logistics. There are few opportunities to expand, which is why Veenendaal is working together with Ede in realising new business areas.
Veenendaal is also the shopping centre of the region.
Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) is located at about 80 car minutes from Veenendaal. The airport can be reached via the A12, A2, A9 and A4. Rotterdam Airport is also easy to reach via the A12, A20 and A16.
Veenendaal's city bus service is operated by Stadsvervoer Nederland. In addition, there are regional buses operated by BBA and Connexxion. All buses stop at the central bus station in front of the central train station. There are trains to, among other places, Utrecht and Arnhem.
Thanks to its location close to the A12, Veenendaal is easy to reach. It is not a busy city, but there is a transferium near the A12 to reduce traffic in the centre. Buses connect the transferium to the Markt in Veenendaal.
In the centre, parking is paid. There are about 2,400 parking spaces, a third of them in car parks.
Veenendaal has only one hotel: Hotel Ibis, which is located next to the A12. Booking in advance is not necessary. In the surrounding area (Ede, Rheenen, Lunteren) there are a few hotels, and there are plenty of campsites and holiday parks
