Location information for Port Louis
Introduction
Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius. In the eighteenth century the island was under French government, until the British took over in the nineteenth century. Mauritius became independent in 1968. Many historical buildings have been preserved, like the fort Adelaide (also: La Citadelle) which characterizes the port. Before the French, the Dutch used the island as supply station for ships set out for the Netherlands East Indies. They named it after stadtholder Prince Maurice.
Population
The city has approximately 150,000 inhabitants. The largest part the population consists of descendants of laborers who were brought in from India by the colonial rulers in the nineteenth century.
Location
Port Louis is located on the northwest coast of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. On the east and south sides, the city lies on the slopes of a massif, the Port Louis Moka Range. Besides the main island, the Republic includes the islands of Rodrigues (east of Mauritius), Cargados Carajos (north of Mauritius) and the Agalega Islands.
Economy
Port Louis is a prosperous city with the port being the backbone of its economy. It's the largest container port in the Indian Ocean. Besides commercial ships, luxurious yachts and cruise ships also moor at the port of Port Louis. Industry mainly consists of clothing, but there are also some chemical factories. Tourism is important: Mauritius is a popular holiday destination.
Airports
Mauritius Airport is situated on the island's southeast coast and is called Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in full. It was named after the country's first prime minister. It's also known as Curepipe Airport. The airport lies 48 kilometers southeast of the capital and is reachable by rental car via freeway M2.
Public Transport
Port Louis has good public transport. Besides city buses there are excellent connections with other places on Mauritius. Bear in mind that there are two bus stations for regional buses: Victoria Station for buses to and from the east and the south of the island; Gare du Nord on Immigration Square for buses to and from the north.
Traffic and Parking
Port Louis is an active city and the junction for all public transport on Mauritius. Traffic is busy and finding a free parking place in the street may be difficult. There's a parking garage (Dias Pier) near the renewed port (Le Caudan Waterfront) where you can safely park your car. There are also two parking lots here: Marina Quay Parking and Barkly Wharf Parking.
Hotels
There's a huge choice of accommodations, both in Port Louis and elsewhere on Mauritius. Popular, but luxurious hotels can be found on Le Caudan Waterfront, a large shopping and entertainment area. Here you'll find for example Le Suffren Hotel and Marina (four stars) and Le Labourdonnais (five stars). Cheaper places can be found a bit further away from the port. Holiday resorts can be found in tourist places like Grand Bay, Flic en Flac, Chamarel and Mahebourg.
