The picturesque city of Alghero on Sardinia has been a tourist attraction for a long time. Previously, mainly the wealthy spent their holidays here, nowadays Alghero draws a mixed crowd. Discover the mellow life in the old walled port town with curvy streets and alleys, cozy bars and excellent restaurants where seafood dishes prevail. You will here Catalan being spoken here and there, because the Spanish ruled Alghero for a while. This influence can be found, not only in the language, but also in architecture and the local cuisine. Near Alghero there are beautiful sandy beaches. They are very crowded near the city, but the further you take your rental car north, the quieter the beaches become.

Alghero is situated in the North West of the Italian island of Sardinia. Twenty kilometers North East of Alghero is the larger city of Sassari.
Previously fishery was the city's most important source of income, but nowadays tourism has surpassed this sector immensely. South of the fishing port, a large marina has been constructed, where hundreds of yachts are moored in summer. In Alghero's hinterland there are some vineyards.
Alghero airport is located twelve kilometers north of Alghero and is easily accessible by rental car via the SP44. From Sassari it's a 25 kilometer drive to the airport: take the SS291 until the intersection ‘Strada dei Due Mari’. There, go left in the direction of Alghero. The airport exit is clearly indicated on all roads.
In Alghero-city there are four bus services. There is also a red shuttle bus (Trottolo) between the harbor and Capo Caccia; you can get on and off at any point on the route. Furthermore, there are several connections to other locations on Sardinia.
Part of the center of Alghero is a pedestrian zone. Outside of this zone the streets are narrow too. Furthermore there are many streets with one way traffic, which can make it difficult for you to find your way around by car.
To explore the rest of Sardinia, a rental car is an ideal means of transportation. Sardinia is the only Italian region without highways. However, the roads are excellent. They connect all the larger towns. The secondary roads are often narrow and curvy. You should drive carefully and slowly there. If you take your rental car further inland, be aware that these roads may be unpaved. Therefore, be prepared for loose chippings.
Alghero has a wide range of hotels and other accommodations. Most of the hotels are located just outside the historical center or on the beach on the North side of town.
